I am failing

January 18th, 2009 at 09:56 pm

Why oh why do I always say I will do something good with my money and then always blow it.
I can't say that I always blow it, but I do burn it up quickly.
Fast food:$38 and change at White Castle, $6 for McDonald's for one just a minute ago. $7 and change for McDonald's last night for two.
Gas spent going to these places:$.50 for the White Castle, at least. $.25 for both McDonald's.
Well, that is way to much to be throwing away.
That's only two days and three different stops.
Granted, the kid's nuggets were for quickness, but the laziness for dinner last night was all mine.
I have shamelessly posted my wares for sale on this site, as I have lost resources at my job. My schooling is doing good, but I have put a lot in my lap and now I have to put it away in proper order. My classes are getting harder now and winter is taking it's toll on us by being couped up all day and night. My children need to run. I should take them to a gym somewhere.

I am very proud of myself for not buying alcohol for two weeks straight. My cousin who lives next door wants to drink at night. I already feel guilty for not spending any time with my DS2BH, so to do that, either here or there isn't being with him. I am not going to Girlz Nite this Tuesday either. I am staying here and putting the kids to bed early.Wink

I shall get my effects in order, since it is coming up on tax time and all. I do it as soon as I get it. My refund comes faster and it is done and out of the way.
My credit card should be arriving soon, which is cool, but my interest rate is going up. That is not cool.
To that I bid ado.

I think you need to look at 2 things:
    1. Why you are eating so much fast food, and
    2. What you are ordering when you get there.

How many people did you feed at White Castle for $38? At $5/person, that would be 7 people. I'd suggest you both limit your fast food runs AND limit what you buy when you get there. Drink water - it's FREE. Instead of each person getting their own order of fries, get just a couple and share. And clip coupons whenever possible. We had lunch at Boston Market yesterday and had a $4 off $20 purchase coupon. The 3 of us had a decent meal for just over $17.

We spend too much on eating out, for sure, but we do our best to control the spending when we do go out.

We don't eat out much. And we don't eat fast food. You might look at some alternatives...

I spend time on the weekends getting meals planned and organized for the coming week. And we stick to it. Trader Joe's sells a frozen "Orange Chicken" that is similar to Panda Express. I have 4 children, so we use two bags of OC, rice and broccoli for a quick meal. The OC at TJs is $4.99. So our "quick" meal isn't much more than $10.00, and it's almost like going out because it's so easy.

I make up burger patties ahead of time and keep them in the freezer. And you could add some frozen fries. I also keep soup and ingredients for grilled cheese on hand. Easy. Our other quickies include quesadillas and smoothies, BocaBurgers, Baked Potatoes with grated cheese, broccoli and ham (if we have some bits in the freezer), pancakes, scrambled eggs...

And when it's a particularly busy month, I actually post a list inside the cupboard of easy/quick meals. Sometimes I get so busy and frazzled that I can't think of WHAT to do at 5:00 when everyone's starting to get hungry. I check the list and pick something.

Planning a crock pot meal once a week also helps. Then, you have something hot and yummy at just the right time!

    Good luck!

Ok, so you made a quickie decision to spend money on fast food and now you regret it. Don't beat yourself up over it, and DON'T say "I'm failing"! You can't undo it, but you don't want to get so down on yourself that you figure you might as well give up on the rest of the week or the month. Just take some of the ideas here and plan what you will do differently next time. I know that my dinner-in-5-minute-meals are not necessarily nutritious, but they are cheap and quick and they keep me from stopping for fast food. Hotdogs and a salad, fried pork chops with tater tots or fries and some canned veges heated in the microwave. Good luck!

If you leave any means of spending money at home (so you're not tempted to buy), a good place to take your kids to run their energy out in the winter is at the mall. Most malls seem to have an indoor kiddie park.

Regarding the fast food. Maybe take a look at the websites of White Castle and McDonalds and see what the nutritional values are for the foods you are buying. Compare that to nutritional values of food you can prepare at home (even mac and cheese.) Which is not just a better $ value, but which is a better nutritional value?

    You're not failing !!

You're just a human being like the rest of us... we all slip up from time to time ( and its not like you went out and bought a new car on credit !!).

Agree with lisajane in that you should just remove it from your mind, move on and don't blow it out of proportion.

    You're doing a great job !! :-)

I agree--don't beat yourself up, just start again. Life s all about starting again. But for a successful start, you need a plan. I always think it's useful to have some emergency meals in the freezer, and I'll use coupons to buy things I wouldn't ordinarily buy--quick dinners etc, to help through crazy days.

Perhaps using a crockpot will help. When life is superbusy...having the meal ready to go when I get home is so nice! I just toss things in in the morning, and they are ready when I get home.

Life happens. We make decisions and if they work, good, if not, we (hopefully) learn from them. Life is way too short to deem yourself a failure because of a lesson. Be kind to yourself...and do it differently next time!!
