Credit Card Fees again

May 27th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

I can not seem to keep my payments up on my credit cards. I want to scrap the whole thing and wait 10 years from the time they last thought of me. Really, what's a girl to do? I haven't been working as much since I am going to school, and all of DH's money goes to current bills that are necessities.

Advice anyone?

Do you feel comfortable sharing budget info? You could even try credit counseling or calling creditors and telling THEM what you can afford per month.

Forgive me if this reply is harsh because I haven't followed your blog closely and I may have missed something, but this post struck me as troublesome.

You are having trouble staying current on credit card bills, correct. But in a recent entry, you said you were saving for a Wii and "lots of accessories", a trip to Florida to visit your cousin and a special account to throw a party in 2011 (for what, I'm not exactly clear). Plus you got your tax stimulus rebate and used it to buy a new mattress. I see that your mom ended up getting you the Wii for your birthday. What happened to the money that you had already saved to buy one yourself? That should go toward debt repayment. And forget Wii games or accessories. If you can't make your credit card payments, you certainly can't afford to be blowing money on video games. The same goes for that trip to Florida and that party 3 years from now.

Making your credit card payments and getting out of debt needs to be priority number one way ahead of luxury items and special treats.

Even buying the mattress could be viewed as a luxury purchase. You spent $617 for the bed. For $100 or so, you could have gotten a high quality air mattress like an AeroBed that would have been perfectly fine to sleep on until you could actually afford a regular mattress. That would have given you about $500 that could have gone toward your credit card debt.

Again, I don't mean to come down on you but I really think you need to rethink your priorities and consider options and consequences a lot better before spending any money. It is just rather disingenuous to make one post saying you can't afford your credit card bills and another post telling how you've spent money or are saving money to buy luxury items.

I second what aevans1206 asked. Consider posting your budget here or on the Personal Finance board and letting everyone make suggestions about how you can cut costs and direct more money toward debt repayment to speed you along the path toward financial freedom.

I thnk there are a lot of people who are having trouble making CC payments lately. Maybe you can do the half.com, ebay or craigslist thing to help suppliment your payments.

I'm with Steve in that maybe it is time to re-prioritize. Take a look at your spending plan and see if there are areas to cut back on. I know when hubby got laid off, the first thing we did was cut our discretionary spending--we cut the cable bill, got rid of the landline, stopped taking the kids with us to the grocery store (less in the cart) and we are tracking every penny that goes out. We found once we re-prioritized what was important, unemployment wasn't as scary as it was the day it happened. We are still having fun, but finding less expensive ways to do it all. This could work with your credit card bills.
