Working can be hard

March 17th, 2008 at 12:53 am

At my job, I mostly stand. I stand in front of doors that someone is not allowed to enter, I stand at the elevator making sure that no one with out a ticket can use it. I stand all the time. My feet hurt. I was told a long time ago to take care of my feet, as they will last me my whole life. If I don't want them to hurt, I need to take care of them.

Well, my $30 shoes are wearing out, causing my feet pain. If I were to buy new shoes, they would hurt again, as they would be new and have to be broken in.

What's a girl to do. I could not work as much, but that isn't an option.
I could ask my mom to buy me some shoes, but she is already helping me pay for my children to join little league for the first time this year. I guess I could just deal with it, but this summer, I will be doing some more hard core working, causing me to walk a mile or more a night, and standing, standing, standing.

I can't wait till then. I will definately have new shoes by then.

They're expensive, but they're immediately comfortable and are used the worldover by physical therapists, nurses, doctors, waitstaff, you name it. Dansko's are the bomb! I bought a pair at the beginning of this school year and have not worn another pair of shoes all year. It's about $115 investment, but when you think about the lack of pain and lack of spending on other shoes, it's well worth it.

Can you buy some gel insoles from Walgreens or Walmart to tide you over for a little longer? They will probably not be that cheap, but cheaper than new shoes.

I have trouble with my feet, back, and legs because I have no arches to my feet. Because I am on my feet a lot, my chiropractor recommended New Balance tennis shoes. The model number for the shoe he recommended is #844. I have seen them on sale on the internet. Go to Google and type coupon code new balance. I have also seen them for sale at shoe stores that sell orthopedic type shoes, but not Foot Locker or other usual athletic shoe places. If you can't afford new shoes, try Spenco brand orthotics. Get the 3/4 length ones. I have seen them in pharmacies and sporting goods stores for only about $25.00. Good luck and I hope your feet feel better.

If you can wear the New Balances the previous commenter recommended, you should definitely do so. Like her, I have foot problems, albeit in a different direction-- my arches are so high that the muscle starts to split apart if I don't have the right support. It's exceedingly painful.

The podiatrist recommended Mephistos, which cost about four times as much as I ever expected to spend on a pair of shoes... but they don't hurt at all, they accommodate the orthodics I need, and they last. Their motto is something like, "designed by doctors," and they feel it. My everyday shoes are now the mary jane style Allrounder sneakers. I would recommend them to anyone in terms of comfort, but-- in terms of budget-- I would say consider them only if you really think you need them.
